Hříbeček

Mushrooms · general studies · grade 3
Hello, I am Hříbeček! Come into the forest with me: we will learn what a mushroom is made of and which mushrooms are edible, inedible and poisonous.
⚠ Careful: never eat a mushroom because of a photo or a game. Never pick mushrooms on your own. Ask an adult expert or a mushroom advice centre about every one.

What are fungi?

Fungi are a separate group of living organisms. They are neither animals nor plants. They are not green and most of them reproduce by spores.

Did you know… Some mushrooms are used as food and are rich in vitamins and minerals. Poisonous mushrooms are dangerous because of the large amount of poison they contain. In some fungi people discovered antibiotics, which cure diseases. Other fungi are used in the food industry, for example the moulds on cheeses such as camembert.

🔬 Experiment: a spore print

Do it only with an adult and only with a mushroom the adult knows (for example a champignon from the shop).

  1. An adult cuts the cap off the fruiting body and puts it on paper with the underside down.
  2. The spores that are released fall onto the paper and form a pattern of the underside of the cap.
  3. After two days lift the cap carefully. On the paper you will see the spore print.
  4. The pattern can be sprayed with hairspray to fix it.
